Monte Cengio (Val di Astico)

Monte Cengio with the descent via Sentiero 643 is another hidden trail highlight in the Val di Astico with a fabulous view and an endless descent.

Description

The route starts in the small village of Cogollo del Cengio. From here, take the Vecchia Strada del Costo on what feels like endless hairpin bends up a pleasant incline to the junction with the military road and then on to Piazzale Principe di Piemonte. Once there, the route winds its way on asphalt to the Chiesa dei Granatieri. From here, the ascent begins along an old military road to the summit of Monte Cengio (1354 meters above sea level). A breathtaking panorama with a strong historical background with buildings from the First World War is revealed. In dry air and with good visibility, you can see as far as the Mediterranean and large parts of Venice.

In the upper section, the descent returns to the ascent variant on an old military path with steps at difficulty levels S1 to S2. Then follow this alpine path until you reach the turn-off to Sentiero 643. The path on this first section runs through an idyllic forest and the scenery is reminiscent of the film "Lord of the Rings". At the junction, the question arises as to where the path descends. The upper 100 meters of altitude are only lightly marked and you have to push your bike in places (short rope insurance). Just don't give up is the motto here! Once this section is over, a fantastic Alpini climb leads back to the starting point. At difficulty levels S2 to S3, you'll pass countless lost places, negotiate countless hairpin bends and enjoy endless flow passages before returning to civilization all too quickly. The return journey via Casale runs along small forest and meadow trails that are between S0 and S1 in terms of difficulty.
