Hinterzarten – Studentenweg
Description
The tour starts in Hinterzarten, which can be reached quickly and easily by regional train from Freiburg. Bicycle transportation by train is possible without any problems. Hinterzarten is located almost exactly 600 meters above Freiburg. The route starts on an asphalt road through the typical Black Forest landscape. The little road leads to the Hinterwaldkopfhütte, where the route then climbs steeply up a trail near the Hinterwaldkopf. This final section is short and crisp before the trail descent begins. In the meantime, there are a few more meters to climb at Roteck, then you take the serpentine path down to Zastler. The path is very narrow and full of hairpin bends. A concentrated riding style is required here, otherwise the front wheel will disappear into the bushes next to the trail. This adds 700 crisp but fun Elevation loss to the tour balance sheet. The descent finally leads to Oberried, where a rest is in order to master the upcoming 600-metre ascent without any problems. This initially rides on asphalt, then on gravel roads up to Rappenecker Wiese - the starting point of the wonderful student trail. This is wider than the trail on the Roteck and also flows better. But even here, there are always root sections and, above all, hairpin bends. However, you can easily roll through them all. It is no coincidence that the Studentenweg is a Freiburg classic. It leads down to Kappel, from where you ride along cycle paths back to Freiburg.
Note: The tour is located in Baden-Württemberg with the legal requirement of a two-meter rule. This tour contains elements that do not comply with this regulation. Rather, it reflects routes that are ridden by local mountain bikers. Compliance with the regulations is the responsibility of each individual mountain biker.

Today, 3.7.25: the first part (Hinterwaldkopf to Zastler) is almost a jungle.
The second part (Rappeneck to Kappel) is okay. But very overgrown at the beginning. I wouldn't do the tour again at the moment. Torsten
After 3 years I repeated the tour and am still thrilled!
Apart from 3-4 fallen trees, everything is great.
We rode the tour in a slightly modified version: From Hinterkirchzarten, you ride for a relatively long time on a paved road through small hamlets. This is followed by an ascent on beautiful single trails. At Roteck, there is a tree across the trail that you have to "look for" as the grass and plants are over 1.5 m high. After that, it goes into the aforementioned narrow path, which could have been very nice. Unfortunately, the entire path down to the main road was very overgrown: we had to wind our way alternately through bramble branches and stinging nettles. Recommendation: wear long sleeves and long socks with knee pads. At the bottom, our arms and legs were covered in red welts. The vegetation also meant that there was rarely any flow, as nobody wanted to pass the bushes "quickly". At the bottom, we swerved onto the main road because the trail parallel to the road was also overgrown.
We also had to skip the crossing of the main road and the stream as we couldn't find a bridge - it had probably been washed away. The ascent from Oberried is long and steep! At the top, we made a crossing to Badish Moonrising and the Canadien.
Thanks for the tip on the vegetation. In the summer months, the first Arbfahrt can actually be a bit overgrown. I rode the route in spring and fall, and it was no problem then.
Hi guys, thanks for the feedbacks ; anyone knows what the situation is currently with the overgrowth at the moment? I am planning on heading up there on the weekend but if not super rideable, I'll pick an other trail. Thanks a lot!
We started this tour from Oberried. This meant that we had the first 600 meters of elevation gain at the start of the tour. The descent via the Studentenweg is fun, flowy and fast.
Now we were looking forward to the second stage with the promising descent from Hinterwaldkopf to Oberried. Compared to the other classics around Freiburg i.B., this descent requires a more precise and controlled riding style. The path is narrow in many places, sometimes sloping, sometimes peppered with roots or stones. This wonderful trail fare is rounded off by hairpin bends, which offer one or two exciting challenges.
Without wishing to detract from the other great trails in the region, this descent was an absolute highlight for me. I can recommend this trail to anyone who is looking for varied and technical challenges in this region.
I rode this wonderful tour today on a sunny public holiday. Endless long trails that I didn't know yet, even though I've been to the Black Forest a lot. Many thanks for the tour, I'd love to do more!
I would rate it a 3 for riding technique. Everything is easily rideable.
