Forcella Ciampei

Furcela de Ciampei

The Ciampei rock towers rise high into the sky above the Alta Badia region - and a first-class single trail rides through the middle of them to the Rifugio Puez and down through Val Longia. A super tour, but one that should ideally be tackled in the off-season.

Description

The starting point of the tour is Corvara in Alta Badia, where you first shorten the ascent with the cable car to Col Pradat (season between the beginning of June and the end of September). From now on, you have to use your own muscle power. On a well-maintained trail, you climb up to Lake Ciampei and on to the Forcella. In this way, you gain just under 400 meters in altitude. This completes the main part of the ascent; the following section over to the Rifugio Puez is a wonderful high-altitude trail. Caution: There are a lot of hikers between Col Pradat and Rifugio Puez in high season. It is therefore advisable to get on the cable car as soon as it opens (8.30 am) to get a solid head start on the foot traffic.

The Rifugio Puez is the starting point for the descent through the Val Longia. To do this, you follow the 14er trail, a challenging Dolomite trail: slippery, interspersed with hairpin bends, the occasional ledge, but basically solidly built and rideable. In this way, you wind your way down to the valley floor and then roll comfortably through the valley towards the village of Wolkenstein. It is advisable to take a break from time to time to take in the full beauty of Val Longia. In Selva Gardena, you finally board the Dantercepies gondola lift to then cycle back towards Corvara on the mountain bike trails via the Gardena Pass.

Tip: tackle the tour outside the high season, possibly even outside the operating times of the cable car. The ascent to Furcela de Ciampei can easily be mastered without the cable car. For the return trip from Val Gardena/Gröden to the Alta Badia region, you should ideally take a bike shuttle ride up to the Gardena/Gröden Pass to rejoin the route.

The cable car to Col Pradat has not taken bikes since the 2022 summer season. According to the locals, it is not recommended to go up by muscle power; there seems to be a landowner who likes to chase bikers with a pitchfork.

We did the tour 2 weeks ago and were looking forward to a great tour, as the description sounded very promising.
The ascent from Col Pradat to the Rifugio Puez is described as a well-maintained single trail. In reality, it is a hiking trail on which the bike has to be carried at least 2/3 of the way, as either many roots or stones and steps make the trail almost impossible to ride on. The bike also has to be carried for at least 100 m before it can be ridden a lot on the high-level trail to the hut, but here too it often has to be pushed or carried.
The trail through the Val Longia is technically demanding, especially at the beginning, but is rideable for good bikers. Once you reach the valley floor, the description is correct and the view is magnificent.
Nevertheless, a good tip and for the most part a beautiful tour with wonderful views.
