The epic summit of L'Arpelin above the Col d'Izoard is a magnificent bike mountain with breathtaking views and an eternal, epic and varied trail descent.

Description

This mountain bike tour starts in the picturesque village of Brunissard, south of the famous Col d'Izoard, a pass that connects Guillestre with Briançon and was historically of great strategic importance. The tour initially rides entirely on asphalt up to the pass, with medium gradients and serpentines characterizing the route.

At the Col de la Platrière (2215 metres above sea level), you can admire the breathtaking rock formations and mountain ridges of the region. After losing a few meters in altitude, the next section of the uphill begins, which rides to the actual pass. The Col d'Izoard itself is a lively place, characterized by tourist attractions such as souvenir stands and information boards.

From the pass, the route moves in an easterly direction and rides along a path to the summit. The last few meters to the summit and most of the path can only be tackled by pushing or carrying. Once at the top, there is a spectacular 360-degree view that encompasses all the prominent peaks in the area, including the barriers around Briançon and Monte Chaberton.

The descent starts off challenging with sections of difficulty levels S3 to S4, although it may be sensible to push the bike in particularly exposed areas, as the risk of falling on the ridge path is considerable. The trail becomes easier as it progresses and stabilizes between S2 and S3, following the Torrente de l'Izoard and leading back to the starting point. The descent is varied, with flowing and blocked passages, hairpin bends and rock faces. However, it should be noted that the trail can be prone to erosion after heavy rainfall.

In summary, this tour offers an exciting and challenging descent with a magnificent view. However, it requires a head for heights and surefootedness, especially in the upper section.
