Col de l'Oule
Description
The ascent from Briançon to the Col du Granon is quickly told: You roll along the road via Saint-Chaffrey to Chantemerle and then turn onto the pass road. 1040 meters of elevation gain add up to the culmination point, where you can stop for refreshments at the Buvette and enjoy the fantastic panorama over the Ecrins massif. But you haven't reached the top yet. First you follow a trail that is almost flat and wonderfully rideable in the terrain. Then follows the steeper final section up to the Col de l'Oule - in principle rideable. If you're on an e-MTB, you can crank up the whole ascent without any problems.
The Col de l'Oule is the starting point of the crisp S4 descent down into the Vallée de la Clarée. Initially, the route rides through a beautiful high valley with the two lakes Grand Lac de l'Oule and Lac la Barre. After the lakes, you head into the forest, initially quite flowing, but then increasingly challenging. The trail soon turns into an S4 challenge and remains at this level down to the valley floor. Stony, twisty and tricky - but with a good line, it can be ridden almost continuously. You reach the valley floor between Névache and Roubiion and follow the MTB route out of the valley. Much of the beautiful Vallée de la Clarée is more reminiscent of Alaska than France. You roll around 18 kilometers back to Briançon on a mix of flowing trails, gravel paths and asphalt roads.
