Montgenèvre Ridge-Trail
Description
The starting point of this impressive mountain bike tour is Les Alberts, idyllically situated halfway between Briançon and Montgenèvre. At the beginning, you cycle leisurely through the wild and romantic Vallée de la Clarée to the small village of Plampinet - a relaxed start to the tour. From there, the leisurely pace is over: a steep gravel road winds its way up the rugged southern flank in tight bends and continues into a lonely side valley to Alp Les Arcles. From here, the ascent becomes much steeper - one reason why this route is particularly suitable for e-mountain bikes.
At around 2140 meters above sea level, a single trail branches off to the right, which rides up and down through a completely unspoilt high valley - a first-class scenic highlight. In this way, you reach the Col de Dormillouse and a little later the Col de la Lauze. Here you meet the path that comes up from the back as the standard version of the ridge trail from the Tête des Fournéous.
Our ascent trail is rideable throughout except for a few steep sections. Around the Col de la Lauze, things get even more challenging: the bike has to be pushed over a steep ridge for around 40 meters in altitude. But the effort is worth it - at the top, a sensational trail awaits on the ridge, which runs in a southerly direction. Technically, the trail is in the S2 difficulty range, but in terms of scenery, it is one of the best the region has to offer. The view sweeps from the striking Monte Chaberton to the mighty Écrins massif.
After the panoramic high trail, there is a varied serpentine descent through the forest that rides to the main road. Follow this for a short uphill section before numerous trails on the opposite side of the valley ride back to the starting point in Les Alberts.
