Aiguille Rouge Südvariante

Aiguille Rouge

The Aiguille Rouge is a mountain bike mountain with great views, but it demands a lot of skill both uphill and downhill.

Description

The tour starts in the border area between Italy and France at Pian del Colle. From there, the route leads steadily uphill on asphalt via the SP216 to Le Mauvais Pas. During the ascent, the view opens up to the Valle Stretta and Monte Thabor. At Le Mauvais Pas, in the area of the military installations from the Second World War, the old military path begins. This is partially dilapidated, so you have to carry your mountain bike up to the summit. On the way, you pass a bunker of the "Linea del Vallo Alpino". From here, there are still around 300 meters of ascent to the summit.

On reaching the top, the view of the massive three-thousand-metre peaks of the Susa Valley, the Valle Stretta and the mountains around Briançon is impressive.

The descent is technically very demanding: at difficulty level S4, the route descends steeply. The tight hairpin bends in particular require full concentration. The route then becomes easier and leads briefly up to the Col de l'Echelle. Here you can expect sections at difficulty level S3, in places S2, which are much easier to ride. You then return to Le Mauvais Pas, ride briefly downhill on asphalt and take the last trail cut-off in the first hairpin bend down to Pian del Colle.

All in all, this is a very challenging tour with striking key sections both on the ascent and the descent. The scenery is absolutely worthwhile, but it should be undertaken outside of the main tourist season and especially not during the Italian Ferragosto, as the trails are otherwise heavily frequented by hikers.

I rode the tour on an e-bike, but climbed up via Lac Chavillon. This is much easier and above all (with an e-bike) rideable uphill. Only below the saddle at the summit do you have to use the push assist. We deposited the bike a little below the summit.
