July 2024 tours: focus on Stuttgart, Chiemgau, Landeck and Valmüstair

Here is a review of the ride tours prepared in July 2024: 28 new routes were recorded with a focus on the Stuttgart region, the area south of Lake Chiemsee, Landeck and the Arlberg and the Münster Valley.

July is a good month for new ride tours. The 28 newly researched tours focus on the Stuttgart region and the nearby northern Black Forest, among others. Some of these routes were prepared in conjunction with the major Stuttgart report in the July issue of the print version of Ride. The following tours are particularly worth mentioning:

Chiemgau

The region south of Lake Chiemsee has been the focus of Ride's tour preparation for some time. In July, the previous routes were added:

Landeck, Valmüstair, Vinschgau

Some new routes were also activated in the Switzerland-Italy-Austria border region in July. A previously blind spot in the ride database was Landeck and the Arlberg region, where the first tours are now available. Above all, however, some exceptionally attractive routes have been prepared in Münstertal and Obervinschgau:

Klausenberg-Kamm

A magnificent tour over relatively unknown panoramic peaks in the Chiemgau Alps. The ridge that runs north from the Klausenberg is particularly interesting for lovers of unusual trails. A brilliant panoramic trail tour for bikers who are not too shy to shoulder their best bike and are not afraid of small climbs. The route leads over to the summit area of the Hochries and finally through the Samerberg bike park.

Kranzhorn

The Kranzhorn, at almost 1,400 meters above sea level, is located in the western part of the Chiemgau Alps and thus forms the border between Austria and Germany, whereby the view and the trail descent are legendary due to this geographical location.

Via del Sale - Mont Bertrand

The Via del Sale is an impressive, gravel high road in the Alpes Marritimes, which is particularly popular with motorcyclists. For mountain bikers, it can be perfectly combined with single trails.

Dünser Horn

The Dünser Horn and the Dünser Älpele below provide a great trail circuit in the immediate vicinity of Feldkirch.

Gescheuerwand

Scenic tour up to the Gescheuerwand and wonderful views of Lake Chiemsee. Very cool, challenging trail, always along the ridge. The wonderful forest floor invites you to heat up.

Strommasten Downhill (Ettlingen, Karlsruhe)

Ettlinger Trail-Kombi

This route combines local trails in the Karlsruhe region. South of the city, there are a variety of sometimes challenging single trails.

Northern Black Forest (Germany)

Nara Black Wood Tour

The Black Wood Tour in the Nara Bike Park combines the "Black Wood Line" bike trail and the "Negrentino" singletrail descent. Thanks to the chairlifts, there is very little pedaling on the short but extremely varied and rewarding trail circuit high above the Blenio Valley.

Liebenzeller Trail-Kombi

Bad Liebenzell is considered a regional trail hotspot in the northern Black Forest. This loop takes you around the town, with some of the best trails integrated into the tour.

Wildbader Trail-Kombi

Bad Wildbad is known for its downhill trail. However, there are also good "nature trails" within a large radius of the bike park for those who don't feel at home in the gravity world.

Between Katzenkopf and Kappelberg near Esslingen, a little east of Stuttgart, you will find numerous official MTB trails that are built to an above-average standard.

A trail playground for mountain bikers has developed in the Buocher Höhe near Winnenden near Stuttgart.

Cime des Blanches – Testa del Ferro

The Cime des Blanches (Testa del Ferro), a mountain on the border between Italy and France, is surrounded by countless installations from the Second World War and shows that the Valle Stura is a true biking paradise.

The Tête de Girardin in the Cottian Alps above the Ubaye Valley is a breathtaking panoramic mountain with a crete trail that is also unparalleled when it comes to trails. The tour is one of the highlights in the Queyras

Pflugsberg

The Pflugsberg near Mittersill above the Felbertauern pass road offers a magnificent mountain panorama and, with a clever combination, a technically varied and interesting trail descent to Mittersill.

Haindorfer Berg Trails

The Haindorfer Berg is one of the first elevations at the entrance to the Priental valley and has probably been the best address for nature trail fans in the entire Chiemgau region since the founding of the Geländeradsport Verein Aschau (GRV).

Kampenwand: Sunset Magic Trail

A forgotten trail in a class of its own. Remnants of a once intensive, now reforested alpine pasture. Phenomenal scenery, easily accessible and yet hardly used: 800 Elevation loss with a partly alpine character. South of the Kampenwandbahn cable car, it is surprisingly quiet. Instead, it is wild, rugged, but also extremely flowy. And: adventurous. This tour is particularly rewarding in the late afternoon, when the low sun bathes the sparse mountain forest in warm light.

The Tabarettascharte right at the foot of the Ortler offers an overwhelming descent to Trafoi and a stretcher ascent that is hard to beat in terms of scenery.

Vinschgau Valley (Italy)

Karspitz-Trails

The municipality of Rettenschöss in the southern Chiemgau Alps is rather unknown compared to other Tyrolean tourist resorts. However, a number of beautiful mountain bike tours start from here, the downhill meters of which can usually be covered quite logically on mostly easy and flowing trails. This tour to the Karspitze with its great views is no exception.

Rock ’n’ Rolla Trail Staffnalm

Rock 'n' Rolla is the first official mountain bike trail in Chiemgau. It was built by the TSV Marquartstein mountain bike department in collaboration with tourism, local authorities and forestry as well as 65 volunteers in 1200 hours of voluntary work and without the use of machinery.

Kalser Höhe

The mountain ridge over the Kalser Höhe down to Kals am Großglockner offers a magnificent and varied trail descent with a mountain backdrop that is rarely found in the Alps.

If you want the best of both worlds, you should take the Austrian/Italian border circuit with the legendary descent over Lake Obstans under the studs.

The Flathalm is located high above Landeck and is the starting point of an exceptionally great descent right in the center of Landeck. The trail is considered the best in the region.

The Alpe Ganatsch is located high above the Arlberg highway. Instead of just riding through, you can enjoy the best culinary delights with a great trail descent.

The Aifner Alm is located at the entrance to the Kaunertal. The tour combines a pleasant ascent with a great and varied descent.

The Tellkopf is located at the entrance to Val Müstair. It can be combined into a great trail tour with fascinating views across to the Ortler.

Piz Umbrail extended

The Piz Umbrail is one of the most popular MTB tours in Switzerland. In the classic version, the route leads over the Lai da Rims into the Münstertal valley. In the extended version, a short additional ascent is added. The result: even more trail and even fewer hikers.
