Baita Massarescia

 Baita Massarescia (Veltlin)

A little extra superflow? You can get it on the trail from the Baita Massarescia near Sondrio in Valtellina. It could hardly be any smoother, and that over more than 1300 meters of altitude. The route is an inconspicuous highlight of the Valtellina.

Description

The tour starts at the Chiuro sports ground near Sondrio. Climb into the saddle and pedal through the village up to Ponte. You soon reach the signpost for San Bernardo and the long asphalt road up to the small mountain village. San Bernardo lies 900 meters above the valley floor. But the ascent continues, from here onwards on a sometimes steep gravel road. This leads up to Alpe Campo and the Baita Massarescia just beyond it.

The inconspicuous hill with the dilapidated hut is the culmination point of the tour - not very spectacular, but the singletrail descent ahead has a lot to offer. For the descent, you follow the trail along the ridge, which provides a foretaste of the entire downhill program: fast, flowy, varied and interspersed with the occasional tricky section. It feels like the perfect MTB trail! It continues in this form along the valley floor, interrupted in sections by short stretches on gravel roads, but then the next flowing single trail always follows soon after. The descent is a blast and rides to the outskirts of Ponte. You know the place from the ascent. To get back to Chiuro, you can either take the small roads directly into the village or climb a little further up to Castionetto and descend to Chiuro on a singletrail.

Tour made on 16.08.25.
As already described, the last section is tough. I then pushed the bike past the Rifugio Campiö towards the summit at approx. 1900m. At the Rifugio you have a good view of the Veltlina valley!

The extra effort is worth it, as this part to Massarescia Flow Pur is also on the finest forest floor.
The entire trail down to the valley is a real highlight! Keep your eyes open in any case. I missed/overlooked the turn-off two or three times.

Can only recommend the tour.

We rode the tour yesterday. Unfortunately, it rained a few hours beforehand and an S3 turned into an S4.5: Most of the trail was very slippery either because of the many stones or the roots. We had to walk several sections.
In dry weather, it's certainly quite nice to ride!

I rode the tour on Tuesday. Although it was a bit cloudy, the temperatures were high. The ascent in the last third is really steep and demands a lot from even fit bikers. Sometimes sitting down and pushing the bike is not a sin as the view is not neglected either. The owners of the road have now partly covered the steepest parts with concrete. I guess that makes it easier than before ;-)
The curve festival starts at the entrance. After about 300m, I chose the path to the left instead of over the ridge. This path is also super flowy. Mostly over forest ground, it goes down from 1680m to 1440m. I then pedaled up the 240m again. But this time along the Kretenweg, which is partly slightly exposed and has S5 character in some places. Therefore, the hiking trail on the left can also be seen as an alternative if someone doesn't want it so crisp.
The rest of the way down into the valley is really a first-class trail and deserves to be called super flow. Only the section at "Gulpat" is better ridden along the apple orchard down to Fontana Mura. The path here is practically overgrown, full of brambles, ferns and other greenery. I'm curious to see what the participants of Trail Camp 2022 think of Valtellina and Baita Massarescia.

We have adapted the lowest part of the tour slightly and removed the overgrown trail. Now there is flow without thorn bushes right up to the edge of the village!
