Piazo-Trail - Dagua-Trail

Dagua-Trail (Valmalenco)

Inconspicuous, wild and lonely, the village of Dagua lies on the steep slopes at the entrance to Valmalenco. Accessible only via a single trail. This is perfect for a mountain bike tour away from the crowds.

Description

The starting point is Torre di Santa Maria between Sondrio and Chiesa di Valmalenco. From here, get on the saddle and cycle uphill on the asphalt cycle path until you reach Lanzada. The cycle path now climbs more steeply and rides to Caspoggio. The plan now includes the ascent to Piazzo Cavalli, where a chairlift (with bike transport) once ran up. The chairlift has been out of service since summer 2022 and if you look at the ropes and masts, you will see that it is unlikely to be reopened. That's why you continue under your own steam to Pianicco, on asphalt until then, but then on gravel. This is how you reach Piazzo Cavalli, the mountain station of the aforementioned chairlift. This is the culmination point of the tour, with the 1000-metre descent to Torre on the agenda.

The descent initially follows the Piazo trail, which has been prepared for mountain bikers, but then branches off to the left at the second junction with the gravel road, where a trail begins a little later on the left. This trail rides down to Gianni and soon enters the forest. The trail is beautiful and easy to ride, but is usually overgrown with nettles or blackberries in the summer months. Ideally, you should tackle the tour in the fall when the vegetation has already receded somewhat. The Dagua Trail is marginally maintained If something were done here, it would be a super trail! The trail winds downhill at a moderate gradient, past abandoned hamlets and groups of houses. It's as if you've been catapulted back to another age. In Cristini, the adventure is over and you descend one last stretch of trail to the main road near Torre di Santa Maria, where you started the tour beforehand.

I rode the tour on August 04, 2025. Took the lift from Caspoggio to Pianaccio for 4€. As described in the text the other lift is not running. At Piazzo Cavalli it goes up the last meters to take the trail no. 11 lockdown. Super great! Later it gets steeper and there are some stairs.
I can recommend this loop.
