Kitzbüheler Horn

Kitzbüheler Horn

The striking Kitzbüheler Horn to the east of Kitzbühel spoils mountain bikers with one of the best views in the Tyrolean lowlands and a very technical and exposed trail descent in the upper section followed by bike park trails.

Description

The tour starts just outside Kitzbühel in the Vordergrub area. From here, the route rides steadily up the Kitzbüheler Horn road on asphalt. As this road is frequently used by cars and motorcycles in summer, it is advisable to take the tour outside of peak times. The asphalt path takes you up to the Alpenhaus in a relaxed manner, with some very steep sections to contend with, but these are easily manageable. The route then continues along the Kitzbüheler Horn panoramic road up to the antenna at 1996 meters above sea level. The moderate ascent allows you to make rapid progress.

On reaching the summit, there is an impressive 360-degree panoramic view that is second to none. On a clear day, you can marvel at the Hohe Tauern, the Großvenediger, the Wilder Kaiser, the Loferer Steinberge and even the Karwendel mountains.

An absolute highlight is the descent. First of all, you pass the Horngipfelbahn cable cars in the upper section on hairpin bends with difficulty levels S1 to S2 - ideal for preparing yourself for the challenges ahead. Then turn right onto the very alpine Ludwig Scheiber trail. This leads down to the Harschbichl at 1,600 meters above sea level via partially exposed sections. With difficulty levels S3 to S4 and some very tricky passages, the trail should only be ridden in dry conditions in order to enjoy the full experience.

From the Harschbichl, a mix of forest roads and trail sections leads to the Harschbichl middle station before you reach the entrance to the Harschbichl Trail. This well-designed bike park trail (difficulty S2) rides down to St. Johann with numerous switchbacks, jumps, steep turns and Northshore elements. From there, you take the old Roman path back to the starting point in Kitzbühel.

Conclusion: A fantastic tour in the Tyrolean lowlands near Kitzbühel, which really comes into its own in autumn or in foehn weather with clear views and dry trails.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
