Kitzbüheler Horn - Darkside

Kitzbüheler Horn

The Kitzbüheler Horn is the classic mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps. The north descent in particular is thrilling with its alpine character and technically demanding trail.

Description

The tour starts in St. Johann in Tirol. From here, you can cycle towards Kitzbühel and use the panoramic road with passenger traffic as an uphill route. However, we recommend the route through the Raintal valley shown in the GPX track. This uphill route has varying gradients and is mostly on gravel. It is very quiet and secluded and climbs steadily until you reach the Hornköpfl reservoir in the upper section. From here, you can already enjoy impressive views of the Kitzbühel Alps and the Leoganger and Loferer Steinberge mountains. After circling the reservoir, the route continues on asphalt up to the highest point of the tour, the transmission tower on the Kitzbüheler Horn at 1,996 meters above sea level. The view here is particularly impressive, stretching from the Hohe Tauern and the Wilder Kaiser to the Karwendel and the Leoganger Steinberge mountains. The descent begins on asphalt before turning off behind the Kitzbüheler Horn summit hut and entering the trail. This trail features numerous hairpin bends and technical passages. A clean hairpin turn technique is an advantage here, as the difficulty level ranges between S2 and S3. However, individual sections still need to be pushed, as the transitions are exposed and heavily blocked in places. Overall, the trail descends steadily with consistent difficulty. Dry conditions are important here, as earthy passages become very challenging when wet. In the lower section, you cross the Kitzbüheler Horn on the north side on the Jägersteig and reach the next sections of the trail at the Harschbichl mountain station. These are much easier to ride, with a difficulty level of S1, and alternate in places with short sections of forest road. At the Angerer Alm mountain lake, you finally follow the Harschbichl Trail. This beautifully laid out nature trail with a difficulty rating of S2 leads directly back to the starting point in St. Johann in Tirol.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
