Kleines Jöchl

Kleines Jöchl (Ahrntal)

In the Ahrntal Valley, "steep" is the motto of the day. However, the racy mountains are criss-crossed with trails that are ideal for mountain biking. One of the lesser-known routes is the one to the Kleiner Jöchl near Sand, which provides a first-class insight into the landscape and character of the Ahrntal valley.

Description

The ascent from Sand up to Oberpojen is like the "calm before the storm". A smooth asphalt road makes the first 700 meters a breeze. In Oberpojen, it's half-time for the ascent, and the second part is a real challenge. The gravel road up to the Pojeralm is very steep. Right at the start, you come across an unclear sign prohibiting bikes. The ban obviously only applies to the steepest part of the road and is therefore intended to prevent farmers from having to stop or brake sharply with their vehicles on this section. If you come across an alpine vehicle here, simply take a short break and stand to one side - this could also be done for other ascents in the interests of image cultivation. Finally, you reach the beautifully situated Pojeralm, then struggle up a single trail for a while until you have to walk. The path up to the Kleiner Jöchl is too steep and blocked to ride. However, pushing is no problem, and e-mountain bikers can use the push assist for these 150 meters in altitude.

The Kleine Jöchl offers a first-class panorama of the Ahrntal and the Rieserferner Nature Park. The wild Reintal valley is particularly impressive, in the direction of which the descent then rides. A wonderful but sometimes challenging single trail leads down to a gravel road, where a tricky traverse finally begins. Good riders ride this, while mere mortals get off their bikes from time to time until they reach the dormitories. Now the force of gravity comes into play again as the path rides down to Ahornach. The further the descent goes, the faster and smoother the path becomes. In the village of Ahornach, follow the signposted route to Sand, a varied mix of single trails and gravel roads. This will take you directly to the village center.

Tip: At the Kleiner Jöchl, there is a bench with two lockable wooden compartments. It's worth opening these compartments and checking out the contents!
