Monte Cornetto – Ridge-Ride

Monte Cornetto

The epic Monte Cornetto near Trento offers mountain bikers with technical skills and a head for heights a magnificent descent along the south ridge with indescribable views.

Description

The mountain bike tour starts in the tranquil village of Aldeno and, after a short roll-in, leads onto a steep, paved mule track. The strenuous ascent continues to Garniga Terme, where you meet the asphalted pass road towards Le Viote. The initially tough uphill is compensated for here by a moderate gradient, and you steadily gain altitude until you turn off near the biotope to head for Monte Cornetto.

From this point, the path becomes bumpier and turns into a trail at Bocca Vaiona. The following sections are still rideable for e-bikers, while biobikers will have to put up with some pushing sections. Shortly before the summit of Monte Cornetto, you reach the first exposed sections, which are still easy to pedal before the last few meters to the summit have to be pushed or carried. The summit itself offers a challenge with two significant rocky passages, which must be mastered on foot even on the descent. The views from the summit are spectacular and, on a clear day, stretch from the Dolomites to Lake Garda and from Madonna di Campiglio to the main Alpine ridge.

The descent begins with a mix of S1 and S3 levels of difficulty along the ridge to the south. The western flank offers gentle meadows, while the eastern flank has vertical rocky edges, which requires perfect bike control and a head for heights. The trail rides past Campo Fiorito and remains challenging and adventurous until the La Becca crossing (sometimes the bike has to be pushed). The hairpin bend trail at La Becca requires good technique, especially on loose gravel, and is classified with difficulties of S2 and occasionally S3.

The trail finally ends at Lago di Cei/Biotopo, and after a short asphalt transfer behind Dos Pagano, the trail descends to the elegant finale to Pomarolo. The last sections are characterized by hairpin bends, steep steps, rock faces and very flowy passages and offer a dynamic ride to Pomarolo, from where you return to the starting point via an asphalt road.

This tour is a real challenge with its 2000 metres of uphill and downhill as well as the alpine passages and requires an excellent physical condition and a high riding level. The tour is only suitable for e-bikers to a limited extent due to the pushing passages.
