Description

From Rovereto, you climb up the small paved road that leads to Rifugio Monte Zugna. Instead of pedaling directly to the Rifugio, you take a “detour” after Albaredo on the west side of the ridge. Here you’ll find 200-million-year-old dinosaur footprints, though they aren’t easy to spot. Thanks to the information signs, however, you’ll be able to find them. Later, you pedal back to the mountain road and follow it to the Rifugio. From there, the route continues westward past the Zugna summit to the trails, which wind smoothly and enjoyably from the summit southward at S1 to S2 difficulty levels.

The flat but highly exposed start on the old military trail is followed by treacherous, boulder-strewn switchbacks. You carefully navigate the tight hairpin turns as loose scree crunches beneath your mountain bike tires. Afterward, the mountain opens up again for a rush of speed. The trail becomes gentler, and you let go of the brakes. Passing a small chapel, you dive into the second sector. The terrain becomes challenging once more. Deep leaves conceal treacherous rocks and demand precise line choice. The downhill trail offers the full spectrum from fast S1 to challenging S3. Finally, you glide through the vineyards into the little village of Marco and roll back to Rovereto at a leisurely pace.
