Bocca dell’Ussol
Description
The starting point is in Locca, on the western side of Lake Ledro. Far from the hustle and bustle, you begin with a relaxed ride northward, pedaling on gravel and asphalt toward the Rifugio al Faggio. Up to this point, the ride—or rather, the climb—is a gentle warm-up, but that changes abruptly. The higher you go, the rougher and steeper the trail becomes. Eventually, you reach a historic mule trail, known as a “mulattiera,” which leads steadily toward Bivacco Malga Gui. In this section, you’ll have to push your mountain bike repeatedly before reaching the highest point of the tour at an elevation of just under 1,850 meters above sea level.
After a grueling climb of 1,100 meters of elevation gain under quite challenging conditions, you’ll find yourself at the pass, which captivates with its impressive landscape. While it is possible to extend the summit hike by mountain bike westward toward the old military installations, this is only recommended with caution, as the paths there feature stairs and are extremely narrow in places. A hike on foot to Monte Gavadina, however, is a worthwhile detour for any summit seeker.
Next comes the highlight of the tour: the descent. For long stretches, this rides at S2 level, but also offers occasional S3 challenges. In the upper section, the trail rides above the tree line through alpine terrain, while further down you head back to the Rifugio al Faggio through the beech forests and dense shrubs typical of the region. This is a good spot to stop for a break, though you should definitely check the opening hours. The crowning finale is an extremely smooth ride along the Torrente Assat, which leads you directly back to the starting point in Locca.
