Kalkwandspitze

Kalkwandspitze

The Kalkwandspitze sits enthroned near the Brenner Pass, isolated between the Flatschspitze and Rollspitze and offers a magnificent view in the summit area, as well as a varied trail descent with a perfect hut stop.

Description

The starting point for this challenging tour is the road towards Enzianhütte, south of the Brenner Pass. The trail initially rides on asphalt and later on gravel up to the Enzianhütte. Passing the abandoned Zirogalm, you reach the former ski area. After the Enzianhütte, the trail becomes more selective and leads into a well-developed forest path, which was originally a trail from the Schlüsseljoch and has been converted into a forest road in the last two years. The uphill to the Schlüsseljoch is therefore easily manageable.

At the Schlüsseljoch, you are perfectly situated between the Wipptal and Pfitschertal valleys. A downhill of difficulty S2 begins here on a former military trail of the Vallo Alpino. After a short carrying passage in the sink, the Mulattiera trail follows towards the pass south of the Kalkwandspitze, which you also tackle by pushing. At the summit, 2388 meters above sea level, you reach the highest point of the tour with a breathtaking view of the most important mountain ridges and peaks in the region. The descent begins selectively and exposed, requiring particular caution. It remains very steep up to the yoke.

The return is on an S2 route before turning left in the area of the intermediate Uphill and descending on a sometimes difficult S3 to S4 trail to the Zirog road of the toboggan run. The partly overgrown path requires full concentration. After a culinary break at the Enzianhütte and a short intermediate uphill section, the last stage leads back to the Brenner Pass on a trail with difficulty levels S2 and occasionally S3. From there, you roll back to the starting point on the Brenner cycle path.

Note: The ascent of the Rollspitze involves an extremely long section of carrying, as the path on the north-east side no longer exists. Below the summit, some sections of the former mule track still exist.
