Rosskopf

Rosskopf (Sterzing)

Sterzing offers some interesting trail descents, especially towards the west. One of them rides from Rosskopf to Gossensaß.

Description

The tour starts directly in the northern part of Sterzing. First, you ride slightly below the hospital and pass under the A22 highway before serpentining past Obertelfes on asphalt towards the mountain station of the Rosskopfbahn cable car. A former supply road now provides the perfect uphill route, riding steadily upwards through open spaces and wooded areas. Past the mountain station of the Rosskopfbahn cable car, you can already enjoy magnificent views of the upper Eisack Valley, the Pfunderer mountains and the Sarntal Alps.

Continue to the Sternhütte mountain hut, where you turn left and tackle a steep uphill over the ski slope to the mountain station of the Panoramabahn cable car. Here you cross to the north onto the ridge and cover the last few meters pushing or carrying until you reach the summit (2189 metres above sea level). The panorama is impressive and offers a view of all the striking peaks, from the Dolomites to the main Alpine ridge and the Vinschgau Valley.

The descent begins at the summit along the ridge. Here, the difficulty ranges from S1 to S2, with some key sections between S2 and S3. The trail leads to the Rosskopf/Sterzing ski area with a view of the Brenner border ridge road and the Brenner mountains. It then leads idyllically through the forest, past the Kastellacke and finally onto the 19 hiking trail towards Sterzing. The former supply route for alpine pastures now offers a smooth descent, which is only a little exposed in some places in the middle section, but otherwise rides pleasantly through the forest. The descent seems endless until you finally reach the urban area again in Innerpflersch, near Gossensaß.

Past the military area and the Gossensaß barracks, the route takes you over a short counter-climb under the highway and further south. If you pay attention in Gossensaß, you can still discover some of the buildings of the Vallo Alpino. On a mix of side roads and trail sections, you wind your way past the castle of Straßberg/Oberried and finally return to the starting point in Sterzing.

Note: The uphill can be significantly shortened by using the Rosskopfbahn cable car as a shuttle. The tour can also be combined with the "Herrentisch" descent, which starts directly at the mountain station of the Rosskopfbahn (Ride Tour webcode: 1872). The tour should also be started outside of operating hours or at off-peak times, as there is otherwise an increased number of hikers in the summit area.
